Cité de la musique (France)

Cité de la musiqueThe Cité de la musique is a public cultural institution which officially opened in 1995. Founded as a very open cultural structure in the field of music, it associates performance (two concert halls) and cultural heritage (Museum of music) with education and documentation (Education Department and Multimedia Library). The Cité de la musique thinks itself a cultural crossroads, the mission of which is to bring together different kinds of people around diverse musical, cultural and educational activities. These activities encourage the cultural practice of both children and adults; they aim at valorising diverse musical repertoires and help constructing social ties thanks to a musical pedagogy that is open to the diversity of human cultures and which favours intercultural exchanges. The Education department has expressed its desire to transpose its objectives in terms of culture and society on a European level by participating as co-organiser in a multiannual project “ExTra!” on orally transmitted music.

En Chordais (Greece)

En Chordais The main objectives of En Chordais, a non-profit civil society based in  Thessaloniki, Greece, are research, study, teaching and dissemination based on the history and contemporary reality of a common musical heritage that unites the peoples of Southern Eastern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. It achieves these goals through the production of CDs and books, the organisation or participation in international multidisciplinary projects, the operation of a music school, performances involving musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds and, finally, the support and promotion of new musical creation that engages with these ancient traditions.
The organisation has given the opportunity to more than 4,600 students to follow courses and seminars, having worked with about 130 teachers for this purpose and having awarded over 120 scholarships. It has completed 25 research projects, published 11 books and has released 28 digital compact discs (with accompanying booklets in three languages). It has organised nearly 300 musical events, both  large and small providing the opportunity to over 600 musicians to present their art both in Greece and abroad.

World Music and Dance Centre (Netherlands)

World Music and Dance Centre In September 2006 the World Music and Dance Centre (WMDC) was started in Rotterdam. The WMDC is a unique platform, expertise and course centre and meeting point for music and dance from all parts of the world. In addition to neighbourhood-oriented activities in Delfshaven the WMDC offers professional courses in five world music traditions, music and dance courses for amateurs, extra training and refresher courses for professionals, research in the field of world music education and a platform for local and international talent.
At a historical location in the Delfshaven municipal district a largescale yet intimate complex has arisen which can house both new and existing world music initiatives on a city-wide, national as well as international level. This has resulted in a unique concert venue, expertise centre and meeting point for music and dance styles from all over the world, varying from Argentinian tango to Indian ragas, from Surinam Kawina to Turkish saz music. This way the centre aligns itself with the cultural diversity of its direct environment, the developments in present-day music practice in which non-western music styles play an increasingly important role, and with the growing demand for world music courses and teachers.
